What I Learned As a

Member of Subway’s Global Expansion Team

In my 40s, I had the privilege to be on Subway’s international development team. During my 9 years with the company, I served as Area Development Manager for Sweden, Finland, Israel and South Africa.

From the founder of Subway himself, Mr. Fred DeLuca (RIP), I learned that global brands are built, not born. That the key to building a strong franchise brand is the financial and business education you give your franchisees.

At Subway, we did not only teach franchisees how to make great subs and salads, but more importantly, we taught them how to manage their numbers and finances.

During my time with Subway (first as a franchisee and later as a country developer), I saw the brand grow from 8,000 to 32,000 stores in more than 90 countries. Subway later became the largest QSR franchised chain in the world, reaching over 44,000 locations in more than 110 countries.

Hi, I'm Steven!

I’m the founder and CEO of Franed.com . I help franchisors and franchisees build stronger, more profitable franchise families through simple, practical financial education.

For more than 40 years, I’ve worked in almost every role in franchising. I’ve been a franchisee, master franchisee and country developer for brands like Subway and Pizza Hut, as well as CEO and mentor to restaurant and retail chains across Europe.

Again and again, I’ve seen the same pattern.
Franchisors who teach simple financial skills to their franchisees usually thrive, while those who don't make the right investment in "numbers training", are doomed to run into problems with their franchisees.

That’s why I created Franed.com (Franchise Education) – to help franchisors teach their franchisees to turn confusing financial reports into clear weekly tools that everyone in the network can understand and use.

Today, I help franchise organisations improve their profit, understand their EBITA, and build businesses where they genuinely win – so they can breathe more easily and better enjoy working in the brand they chose.
